Mastering one style of classical music itself is a huge feat. Imagine mastering three! One such person who managed this was Girija Devi. Of the three she mastered she was best known for being a singer of thumri, whose status she helped to elevate.
Girija Devi was born in Varanasi in 1929 and her guru was Sarju Prasad Mishra. In 1949 she made her singing debut on All India Radio. She faced a lot of opposition from her family who believed that girls weren’t meant for music.
In spite of all that opposition, she became one of the greatest singers in Indian classical music. She is remembered as ‘the Queen of Thumri.’ She was also known for singing in khayal and tappa styles.
She was awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for her contribution to music.
Girija Devi breathed her last on October 24, 2017. She left behind a rich musical legacy. Today would have been her 90th birthday. Here are some of her performances to remember him by.
Happy birthday Girija Devi!
