Son of the late Bollywood actor Mehmood Ali, Lucky Ali sang his first song for Ek Baap Chhe Bete (1978) called Walking all alone. Soon after he sang Nasha nasha for his father’s film, Dushman Duniya Ka, even though he refused to act in it, saying that “the story lacked hope”. He chose to focus on music, but has also been a horse breeder, worked on an oil rig, cleaned and sold carpets and now is an organic farmer.
His first indie album was Sunoh, which not only was a crowd favourite, but also won a lot of awards. Lucky Ali’s musical career was launched, and Oh sanam was the song that shot him into the limelight. Sifar, which followed, was an album noted for its music, lyrics and vocals. Aks and Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai did fairly well too.
Lucky Ali is known for his voice, which is untrained and natural, and his music that blends many different styles. He has sung on different compilation albums and has done a few songs for Bollywood films - Na tum jaano na hum for Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), Aa bhi jaa in Sur (2003), Ahista ahista in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Hairat in Anjaana Anjaani (2010) and Safrnama in Tamasha (2015), among others. AR Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj, Vishal-Shekhar, Mikey McCleary, Prashant Pillai, Varun Ahuja and Rajiv Bhalla have done music with Lucky Ali, as have many other composers.
