American singer, guitarist and songwriter Kenny Wayne Shepherd turns 42 today. Self-taught and not reading music, he got his first guitar when he was just three years old, from his grandmother. At about seven years of age, he started playing the instrument and was taken to every concert in the Shreveport Louisiana area by his father, a local radio personality and concert promoter. Young Kenny learned to play the guitar one note at a time, he has said, following tunes from his father’s extensive record collection.
Soon he was playing along with established musicians on stage and got signed on for a multiple album record deal very quickly. From then on it was all upwards and onwards, with award winning singles, albums and movie numbers. He even has a Fender guitar named after him, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Signature Series Stratocaster.
Kenny plays with his band, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, which has released 8 albums so far, last year’s Lay It On Down making its debut at No 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. On July 16 this year Kenny will make his first appearance at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.
