Born as Singanalluru Puttaswamy Mutturaju on April 24, 1929, in Gajanur, Madras Presidency, British India (now in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India) Kannada movie actor Rajkumar is one of the most influential names in the history of Indian cinema. With a huge fan following, his movies had a success rate of more than 95% which is quite impressive. The most interesting thing is that he never worked in other language cinemas in spite of receiving offers from Bollywood too.
Apart from being honoured with awards such as Padma Bhushan (1983) and Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1995), he is the only Indian actor to receive a National Award for his acting and singing. Winning the National Awards as the best male playback singer for the song Naadamaya from the movie Jeevana Chaitra expressed his love for Kannada cinema.
Today on his 89th birth anniversary, SoundboxIndia remembers him through some of his best-sung songs.
