It was 31 years ago that a film called Libaas was made. Directed by poet-lyricist-director Gulzar, it was stored in the archives of the Directorate of Film Festivals all these years, in 2017, when the original producer Vikas Mohan’s sons Amul and Anshul took on the task to revive it. And it will finally be seen in theatres at the end of this year, we are told, after a certain amount of controversy. Apparently, the producer wanted the story to end in one way, while the director had other views, so the stalemate over the climax resulted in Mohan refusing to let the film be shown to the general public.
Based on Gulzar’s short story Seema, it tells the story of theatre director Sudhir (Naseeruddin Shah) and his wife, actor Seema (Shabana Azmi), who is sexually frustrated. So when Sudhir’s childhood friend arrives….Well, it is obvious what happens. A highlight of the film is the music, composed by RD Burman for his close friend Gulzar. These will perhaps be the last released songs by the composer. There are 4 songs, poetic, lilting and beautiful. Take a listen….
- Kya bura hai
- Sili hawa choo gayi
Khamosh sa afsana
- Phir kisi shakh ne
Are you planning to watch Libaas after listening to these songs?
