Zeb and Haniya have established themselves but they still need representation in India. Zeb would be seen composing music for films this year. (Read more details on Zeb’s project on the next page.) Shafqat Amanat Ali’s album is almost ready for release and Kohli reveals, “It will mainly be a digital album but we will be releasing a few physical copies with a music label. It will be aggressively marketed in the digital space and we would be entering into strategic tie-ups with existing online platforms. The idea is to penetrate the content widely in the digital space.” Live is an important part of the design for each artist and Sound Village will tour these musicians in different cities in India. “There might also be collaborations among these artists where they would be mixing each others sounds.” Ask her if the outfit will be working with Indian artists and she states that Indian artists already have representations here and it is easier for them than the Pakistani artists.
After rendering vocals for Imtiaz Ali’s Highway composed by AR Rahman, Zeb Bangash, one half of Pakistani singer-songwriter duo Zeb and Haniya will be seen composing for films. The story behind pocketing the track Sooha Saha in Highway goes back to a chance meeting with the director. On their visit to Bombay couple of years back, they shared their music with Imtiaz Ali and stayed in touch. Last year around spring, Zeb got a call for a track with Rahman. While Zeb sang the playback vocals, Haniya played the ukulele on the track. Known for their world music alternative genre of music, Sooha Saha was unusual for Zeb as it was in Haryanvi dialect. Post the track, Zeb will be working independently and composing for Bollywood projects. “I will be composing couple of songs for Ghoom Ketu where Haniya is also the part composer as we had composed these songs for our earlier album. I shall be reworking a Thumri composed by Karachi based classical vocalist Naseeruddin Saami. Also I am working on some tracks for Running Shaadi.com.” Talking about her film compositions she says, “Bollywood is a different game with the composer translating the directors’ vision and composing fro the character in the film. It is an interesting balance to maintain retaining my style without diluting the signature style of Bollywood.” Zeb also discloses that the band’s album Kya Khayal Hai has been completed and their first video will be directed by the Umar Riaz. It is set to release in March this year. The duo has been working on the album for few years and are still finalising the songs. The title track of the album was featured in The Dewarists episode when they collaborated with Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire. Going solo with her music, Zeb will be represented in India by Sound Village, a venure of Mannu Kohli, ex- Music Today. Working on a project with musicians from the United States, the singer will soon be unveiling her project with tours in India.
