Atul Gogavale was born in Pune and grew up in various towns in western Maharashtra. Along with his younger brother Ajay, he became interested in music when he was in school and started playing old songs and making up new ones, all with their own special twist and flavour. They experimented with various instruments and learned as they played them. Moving to Mumbai, the brothers created an international non-film music album called Vishwavinayaka, which greenlit their passage into the Marathi music industry. Ad jingles, ballets and TV soap operas used their compositions to good effect.

But it is in Marathi movies that Atul and Ajay really started showing off what they could do. The soundtrack and background score for Natarang (2010) pushed them well into the limelight, with compositions that were firmly rooted in the traditions of their home turf – lavani, phataka and tamasha; Natarang ubha and Apsara aali showed off Atul’s vocal ability, with his brother’s voice featuring in other songs from the film. Then Bollywood called and the two replied with chutzpah, creating an interesting sound for movies like Singham, Bol Bachchan, Agneepath, Brothers and PK.

And then came Sairat, a super-duper-hit tragic love story that made stars of everyone who worked on it, from the directors to the actors and the musicians. That success was duplicated in the Hindi version of the story, Dhadak. Tumbbad, Thungs of Hindostan, Mauli, Zero…and the saga continues to Taanaji, Panipat, Shamshera and more.

To wish Atul Gogavale a very happy 45th birthday, SoundboxIndia presents a playlist of 7 of the songs he has composed with his brother Ajay…
