In memory of Guru Dutt (9th July 1925-10 October 1964)

Guru Dutt would have been 94, had he been alive today. Sadly, he passed away too early, after making and being part of a line up of films that are considered classics today. Born Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone, he started his working life as a telephone operator, but soon quit to join Prabhat Film Company in Pune. There he met Rehman and Dev Anand, actors who would become his lifelong friends.

He started his acting career with a bit part as Shri Krishna in Chand (1944) and gradually worked his way from extra to assistant director to choreographer to writer and then, with Dev Anand’s hit film Baazi in 1951, as director, followed by Jaal (1952) and Baaz (1953), neither of which did well. Aar Paar (1954), Mr & Mrs 55 (1955), CID (1956), Sailaab (1956) and Pyaasa (1957) were notable hits, though Kagaz Ke Phool (1959), Dutt’s passion project, bombed, after which he decided not to direct again. And then came Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), directed by M Sadiq – it was a huge success, with the title song filmed in colour, which was unusual at the time and the only one of Dutt’s sequences that was not in black and white. Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) was also received well, critically and commercially. The 1964 Sanjh Aur Savera was Dutt’s last film as an actor; he was working on Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi – a film he was also a producer on – when he died.

Guru Dutt may no longer be here, but the songs he was part of will always be known and heard. These include …
