Sunil Dutt was the ultimate self-made actor. He was born in what is now Pakistan in 1929. At the age of 18 he witnessed the horrors of partition. He shifted to Mumbai for his higher studies and then became a bus conductor. He faced many years of struggle.
He tried his luck with radio and then shifted to acting. His debut film was Railway Platform in 1955. In 1957 he acted in the legendary film Mother India as famous actress Nargis’s son. After Mother India he became a star. While the film was being shot a fire broke out on set. Sunil Dutt risked his life to save Nargis. Apparently this act won her love. The two married and had three children.
Sunil Dutt became one of the biggest stars of the 1960s. He acted in famous films like Mujhe Jeene Do, Khandan, Padosan and Hamraaz.
For the next two decades, Sunil Dutt continued to have a very successful film career. Then in the 90s, he retired from films to join politics. In 1995 he was presented the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Hindi cinema.
He returned to the screen in 2003 for his last film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S starring his son Sanjay Dutt in the lead role.
On May 25, 2005 he succumbed to a heart attack.
